From 1985 to 1991 he was a freelance artist, and then began working as a journalist. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of cultural and artistic programmes for the RTV Slovenia. He is one of the most important Slovenian contemporary prose writers. He writes novels, stories, essays, poems and screenplays.<br \/>\nBesides one book of poetry and one book of essays, Jani Virk has published four books of stories and novelettes: <strong>Skok<\/strong> (<strong>A Leap<\/strong>, 1987), <strong>Vrata i druge pri\u010de<\/strong> (<strong>Door and Other Stories<\/strong>, 1991), <strong>Mu\u0161karac nad ponorom<\/strong> (<strong>A Man Over an Abyss<\/strong>, 1994) and <strong>Pogled na Tiho Brahe<\/strong> (<strong>A View of Tiho Brahe<\/strong>, 1998).<br \/>\nHe has written seven novels: <strong>Rahela<\/strong> (1989), <strong>Poslednje Sergijevo isku\u0161enje<\/strong> (<strong>The Last Temptation of Sergey<\/strong>, 1996), 1895, <strong>Potres \u2013 hronika neo\u010dekivane ljubavi<\/strong> (1895, <strong>The Quake \u2013 A Chronicle of an Unexpected Love<\/strong>, 1997), <strong>Smeh iza drvene ograde<\/strong> (<strong>The Laughter Behind a Wooden Fence<\/strong>, 2001), <strong>Letnji sneg<\/strong> (<strong>Summer Snow<\/strong>, 2003), <strong>Aritmija<\/strong> (<strong>Arrhythmia<\/strong>, 2004) and <strong>Ljubav u vazduhu<\/strong> (<strong>Love in the Air<\/strong>, 2009).<br \/>\nNovels by Jani Virk have been translated in several European languages. His translations from German include works by Thomas Bernhard, Gerhard Roth, Hans Artmann and Elias Canetti. <strong>Arhipelag<\/strong> published, within its edition A Hundred Slavic Novels, Virk\u2019s novel <strong>Poslednje Sergijevo isku\u0161enje<\/strong> (2010).
