As a secretary and editor of the magazine Knji\u017eevnost (Literature), she was a member of the editing board led by Eli Finci and the one led by Zoran Mi\u0161i\u0107. She spent a number of years editing for the Publishing House Prosveta, working on the editions of contemporary Yugoslav prose and essayistic writing. She founded the library Ba\u0161tina (Legacy).<\/p>\n<p>She has published novels: <strong>O\u017eiljak<\/strong> (<strong>Scar<\/strong>, 1956, second adapted edition 1999),<strong> Lagum<\/strong> (<strong>Dungeon<\/strong>, 1999), <strong>Bezdno<\/strong> (<strong>The Bottomless<\/strong>, 1995), <strong>Nigdina<\/strong> (<strong>Nowhere<\/strong>, 2000) and <strong>Vostanije<\/strong> <strong>(The Uprising<\/strong>, 2004);<\/p>\n<p>the essays: <strong>Savremenici<\/strong> (<strong>The Contemporaries<\/strong>, 1968), <strong>Ukletnici<\/strong> (<strong>The Cursed<\/strong>, 1993) and <strong>Izabranici<\/strong> (<strong>The Chosen<\/strong>, 2005);<\/p>\n<p>the story collections: <strong>Dor\u0107ol<\/strong> (1981), <strong>Vra\u010dar<\/strong> (1994), <strong>Glasovi<\/strong> (<strong>Voices<\/strong>, 1997), <strong>Knjiga za Marka<\/strong> (<strong>A Book for Marko<\/strong>, 1998), <strong>O\u010darane nao\u010dare<\/strong> (<strong>Spell-bound Spectacles<\/strong>, 2006) and <strong>Sedam mojih drugara<\/strong> (<strong>Seven of My Pals<\/strong>, 1997); the prayer <strong>Svetilnik <\/strong>(1998);<\/p>\n<p>the dramas<strong> Knez Mihailo<\/strong> (<strong>Prince Mihailo<\/strong>, 1994) and <strong>\u017dezlo<\/strong> (<strong>Scepter<\/strong>, 2001); the novelised biography <strong>Prozraci<\/strong> (<strong>Rays Through<\/strong>, 2003) and the book <strong>Kapija Balkana<\/strong> (<strong>The Gates of the Balkans<\/strong>, a quick guide through the history of Belgrade, 2011).<\/p>\n<p>Awards: Isidora Sekuli\u0107, Ivo Andri\u0107, Me\u0161a Selimovi\u0107, \u0110or\u0111e Jovano\u00advi\u0107, Bora Stankovi\u0107, Award of the Serbian National Library for the most read book of 1992, the NIN Award in 1995, Neven Award, Politikin zabavnik Award, 6. april for life work on Belgrade, awards Mi\u0161i\u0107ev dukat, Ramonda serbica, Stefan Mitrov Ljubi\u0161a and Jack Konfino.<\/p>\n<p>Her works have been translated into English, French, German, Russian, Spanish, Italian, Greek, Bulgarian, Korean and Hungarian.<\/p>\n<p>Svetlana Velmar Jankovi\u0107 is a permanent member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Svetlana Velmar Jankovi\u0107 was born, went to school and lives in Belgrade.
