She graduated in Yugoslav and General Literature from the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade in 1985. She published her first poems and academic papers in Serbian. During her studies, she wrote literary criticism and served as editor-in-chief of the journal Znak. She has lived in London since the age of twenty-four. She received her MA in Modern English Literature in 1992 and her PhD in 1996 from the University of London, as a British Academy scholar.<\/p>\n<p>She began her professional career in publishing in 1986, working as an editor for the academic publishing houses Chadwyck-Healey Ltd and Editions Alecto, before moving into radio in 1990. For ten years, she worked as a producer and presenter at BBC Radio. She became a professor of English literature and creative writing in 2000. She previously taught at Kingston University and the University of East Anglia, and has been teaching at the University of Exeter since 2017. She has also been a visiting lecturer at St. Lawrence University in New York and Bucknell University in Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>She has written several books in different genres, all of which have been translated into multiple languages. Her literary study Inventing Ruritania: The Imperialism of the Imagination (1998) is required reading in Balkan Studies departments at universities around the world. Chernobyl Strawberries (2005) is a memoir about growing up in Yugoslavia and her first steps in poetry. It was serialized in the London Times and became a bestseller across Europe, with fourteen editions published in German alone. The Angel of Thessaloniki (2011) is her first poetry collection, written simultaneously in Serbian and English. The English version received the \u201cRobert Crowshaw\u201d International Award and was included in The Times selection of the best poetry books of 2011. Her first novel, Gorsky (2015), in which she modernized the story of The Great Gatsby, was also serialized by the BBC over two weeks. Her second novel, Monsieur K (2017), continues the story of Anna Karenina.
