He graduated from the Sorbonne\u2019s Department of Modern French Literature, where he also earned his PhD by defending a comparative thesis on French and Turkish poetry. He teaches Turkish Literature at the National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilisations in Paris (INALCO). He leads a scientific research project dedicated to Turkish literature at the National French Science Research Centre. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nedim G\u00fcrsel has written a number of story collections, several novels, and works of travel writing and literary history studies, among which are: <b><i>Love in the Afternoon <\/i><\/b><i>(O\u011fleden Sonra A\u015fk), <b>The Book of Women<\/b> (Kad\u0131nlar Kitab\u0131), <b>The Conqueror <\/b>(Bo\u011fazkesen), <b>A Summer without End<\/b><\/i> <i>(Uzun S<\/i><i>\u00fcrm\u00fc\u015f Bir Yaz),<b> The Death in the Sun<\/b><\/i> <i>(Gune\u015fte Olum), <b>A Handful of the World<\/b> (Bir Avuc<\/i> <i>Dunya), <b>The World in Images<\/b> (Resimli D<\/i><i>\u00fcnya),<\/i> <b><i>The Paris Texts<\/i><\/b><i> (Paris Yaz\u0131lar\u0131), <b>The First Woman<\/b> (\u0130lk Kad\u0131n), <b>Traces and Shadows<\/b> (\u0130zler ve<\/i> <i>Golgeler), <b>Nazim Hikmet \u2013 The World\u2019s Poet<\/b><\/i> <i>(Dunya \u015eairi Naz\u0131m Hikmet), <b>Rebelled Literature<\/b> (Ba\u015fkald\u0131ran Edebiyat), <b>Yachar Kemal<\/b> (Ya\u015far Kemal), <b>Remember, Barbara<\/b><\/i> <i>(Hat\u0131rla Barbara), <b>The Daughters of Allah<\/b> (Allah&#8217;\u0131n K\u0131zlar\u0131).<\/i><\/p>\n<p>He has received a number of Turkish and international literary awards \u2013 <i>the <\/i><i>Prize of the Turkish Language Academy <\/i>(1976), <i>the Abdi Ipek\u00e7i Peace Prize <\/i>(1986), <i>the Freedom Award by French PEN Club <\/i>(1986), <i>The Haldun Taner Citation for Story <\/i>(1987), <i>the Struga Gold Plaque Poetry Award <\/i>(1992), <i>the prize for best story by Radio France Internationale <\/i>(1992), <i>Chevalier of<\/i> <i>the French <\/i><i>Order of <\/i><i><a title=\"Arts and letters\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arts_and_letters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arts and Letters<\/a> <\/i>(2004), <i>The World Brotherhood Prize \u2018Mevlana\u2019 <\/i>(2009).<\/p>\n<p>His novel <b><i>The Daughters of Allah<\/i><\/b><i> <\/i>won him the <i>Prize for Freedom of Thought and Expression <\/i>in 2009, awarded by the Association of Turkish Publishers, and he has received the International Literary Award <i>Balkanika <\/i>for the novel <b><i>Satan, Angel and a Communist<\/i><\/b> (\u015eeytan, Melek ve Kom\u00fcnist).<\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>About the author Nedim G\u00fcrsel (1951) is an eminent Turkish writer and intellectual whose extensive and diverse literary opus has gained followers in more than twenty countries all over the world.
