He is one of the most important contemporary Slovakian writers. Best-known as a novelist, Anton Bal\u00e1\u017e is also a playwright, publicist and author of several television screenplays.<br \/>\nThe most important novels: <strong>Senke pro\u0161losti<\/strong> (<strong>Shadows of the Past<\/strong>, 1978), <strong>Ovde \u017eivite<\/strong> (<strong>You Live Here<\/strong>, 1983), <strong>Hirur\u0161ki Dekameron<\/strong> (<strong>The Surgical Decameron<\/strong>, 1989), <strong>The Camp of Fallen Women<\/strong> (1993), <strong>Do\u017eivotna ljubav<\/strong> (<strong>Lifelong Love<\/strong>, 1995), <strong>Hronika sre\u0107nije budu\u0107nosti<\/strong> (<strong>The Chronicle of a Happier Future<\/strong>, 1997), <strong>Penelopin povratak<\/strong> (<strong>Penelope\u2019s Return<\/strong>, 1998), <strong>Zaboravljena zemlja<\/strong> (<strong>The Forgotten Country<\/strong>, 2000), <strong>Bogovi sezone<\/strong> (<strong>The Gods of Season<\/strong>, 2003).<br \/>\nBal\u00e1\u017e\u2019s novels are characterised by a critical and grotesque image of social everydayness. Bal\u00e1\u017e has shaped a picture of a totalitarian communist society in Eastern Europe, while in his works written after the 1990s, he powerfully sheds light on the holocaust of the Jewish community in Slovakia. His novel <strong>The Camp of Fallen Women<\/strong> is the best known book by Anton Bal\u00e1\u017e. In 1997, this book was adopted for film, released under the same title.
