Ljubica Arsić

Ljubica Arsić is a Serbian author born in Belgrade in 1955. She graduated from the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade in the Department for Yugoslav literature and the Serbo-Croatian language. Her literary debut was in 1984 with a collection of stories titled Hitting a Raw Nerve (Prst u meso). She has published over ten collections of stories and novels and has compiled multiple anthologies of contemporary domestic and foreign stories. Her novel Heaven’s Gate (Rajska vrata) was shortlisted for the NIN Award. As an author, she prefers a short, effective, and often, shocking story, while her novels explore topics of the position of women in society, questions of identity, familial relations, and love, where she doesn’t stray from erotica, humorously breaking taboos and reshaping prejudice. She was one of the editors of a Serbian literary magazine Sarajevske sveske and a longtime professor of literature at the Mokranjac Music School in Belgrade. Her works have been translated into French, German, Greek, and Ukrainian and are present in foreign anthologies of Serbian writers. She is a columnist for the Serbian daily paper Politika and a member of the Serbian Literary Association.
